The International Cricket Council (ICC) Board has suspended Sri Lanka Cricket’s membership of the ICC with immediate effect.
The ICC Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka.
The conditions of the suspension will be decided by the ICC Board in due course.
Sri Lanka completed their 2023 Cricket World Cup campaign with a five-wicket loss to New Zealand… with 160 balls still to be bowled. With four matches to be played by other nations ahead of the semi-final, Sri Lanka are in 9th place on the table.
The Netherlands would need to beat India comfortably to rise above Sri Lanka, or for the match to be rained off and the teams to share the points. Former champions and two-times losing finallists, Sri Lanka won just two of their nine games in this Cup. Their wins came against the Netherlands (five wickets) and England (eight wickets).
