There’s a lot of heat on Temba Bavuma, and understandably, as he hasn’t scored enough runs for the Proteas.
The problem for me is that none of his team-mates have done much better. If you call for Bavuma to be dropped then the rest of the top order, excluding Quinton de Kock, should also go.
Aiden Markram is one player who is often touted as a future Proteas captain.
Great striker of the ball and huge talent, and he got off to a great start against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe which gave him a brilliant average early in his Test career, but if you look at the stats he is actually on a par with Temba in many ways.
Selections are often controversial, but if you want to be objective or look for the ‘truth’, then it’s important to examine the stats in greater detail. It’s also important to put certain performances in the context of the match situation and the opponents.
For me, Markram needs to bat 4 and Bavuma at 6, and if the rest of the team is offering some support then the two of them could lead SA back up to No1 spot… when you consider the strength of our bowling.
